Kevin’s Cruisers: MDA Muscle Walk 2015

Muscle Walk Meet and Greet Lunch

Muscular Dystrophy affects over 1,500 families in Eastern North Carolina. One of those families, the Schaefers, is very close to the AroundCampus Team. Glenn Schaefer has been our office UPS deliveryman for the past 13 years and counting. Like clock work he comes in for delivery twice a day along with a friendly hello and a quick chat about sports and life. One thing you’ll quickly learn about Glenn and his family is their dedication and participation in the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Eastern North Carolina. Glenn’s son, Kevin, has a disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

The Schaefer family has participated in the MDA Muscle Walk for over 10 years. This year their team Kevin’s Cruisers has raised over $28,000 to make them the top fundraising team in the Triangle. Amber Toy the Fundraising Coordinator for the Triangle area said, “The Schaefers are nothing short of amazing. Their impact and guidance for other families living with muscle disease remains one of their largest roles at MDA.”

The Schaefer FamilyAC Customer Relations Manager, Tiffany Johnson, was working at the Welcome Desk three years ago when Glenn brought in a flyer about raising money for the annual MDA Muscle Walk. Our office has raised funds for the for many years and Tiffany said, “I was inspired by Glenn’s passion for the MDA Muscle Walk and the amazing stories he always shared about his son Kevin. As I learned more about Muscular Dystrophy, I knew that I had to do my part to help Glenn with his fundraiser.”

For the past three years in our office Tiffany has increased the awareness for Kevin’s Cruisers and lead the annual company-wide fundraiser to show our support for the Schaefers. This year we’ve raised over $1,200 for Kevin’s Cruisers and Tiffany coordinated a Meet & Greet Lunch with Kevin and Glenn.

Glenn said, “I have been fortunate in the past several years to have developed an excellent working relationship with the Around Campus Group. The employees are very enthusiastic about financially supporting all of our fundraising activities for the MDA. I am so thankful we have businesses like the AroundCampus Group who genuinely care about helping others. It is an outstanding corporate citizen.”

The donations and support through the MDA Muscle Walk of Raleigh helps over 1,500 families in 18 North Carolina counties. The MDA covers 43 muscle diseases and provides support for these families. The donations cover these 5 main areas:

  1. Support groups for MDA as well as new and existing families
  2. Money is allocated to all the families evenly at the beginning of each year and helps with costs that insurance may not cover. MDA also has a loan closet for the families; when their personal equipment needs to be repaired, they loan them a chair or walker to use until the family gets theirs back.
  3. MDA Summer Camps – covers 100% of summer camp costs for every child. It costs $800 per child for a week. These summer camps allow participants to do anything from zip lining to horseback riding.
  4. MDA-funded research projects
  5. Clinics at Duke University and the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill

The MDA Muscle Walk of Raleigh is April 11th and the total 2015 fundraising goal is $86,000.
